Microcredential in Engineering Education Research
Do you have an interest in exploring educational research in engineering?
The Engineering Education Research Microcredential provides a foundation in the theories, methods, and ethical practices needed to conduct rigorous engineering education research.
Through three graduate-level courses (6 credits), you will explore the history and emerging directions of the field, learn to design high-quality quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods studies, and develop the knowledge required to conduct responsible research with human participants.
Courses
- ENED 7001 – Introduction to Engineering Education & Research (3 cr) How do engineers study engineering education? This course traces how engineering education became a research field and explores the big ideas shaping it today. You’ll survey current research, discover major themes in the literature, and begin positioning your own interests within the field.
- ENED 7005 – Engineering Education Research Design (2 cr, first 10 weeks) How do you design a strong study? Learn the core building blocks of engineering education research design across quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. The emphasis is on alignment—making sure your research questions, data, sampling, and methods all work together.
- ENED 7006 – Ethical Considerations in Human Subjects Research (1 cr, last 5 weeks) What does responsible research look like in practice? Focus on ethics in engineering education research involving human participants. Topics include IRB-related practices, protecting participants, preregistration, and data sharing. Students also complete CITI training to prepare for conducting human subjects research.
How to enroll to earn the microcredential
You do not need to be enrolled in the Engineering Education Research Microcredential to take ENED 7001, ENED 7005, or ENED 7006. Students may complete these courses as part of another graduate program or as electives and then apply for the microcredential after successfully finishing the three courses by contacting the Department of Engineering and Computing Education’s Graduate Studies Director, Sheryl Sorby (sorbysa@ucmail.uc.edu), or David Reeping (reepindp@ucmail.uc.edu).
